Cervical Cancer Symptoms Ignored Eight Times
Girls, please dont be shy when it comes to problems with your bits and bobs… I was horrified this afternoon to hear about Nikki Sams from Luton, who died at 26 from Cervical Cancer after her doctor ignored her complaints of irregular bleeding and adominal pain eight times in four years! At no stage had he performed any abdominal or internal examination or sent her to hospital. She was only diagnosed after changing doctor. This is disgusting news, especially after Jade Goody’s publicity and public awareness last year.
Never be put off if your doctor dismisses your symptoms and you fear there might be a serious problem. I recently interviewed Jenny Cove who survived Cervical Cancer through radiotherapy, chemo and a small operation. She was only 29 when diagnosed but caught it quickly as soon as symptoms started!
Most women don’t realise there is an 80-99% chance of surviving Cervical Cancer if it’s caught in the earliest stage, according to Dr Miriam Stoppord, Daily Mirror. And 20% of women can live up to 5 years before the cancer becomes advanced.
I know it’s probably not something you want to discuss with your girlfriends but don’t get shy with the doctor – there’s nothing to be ashmed of. If you are having problems put your foot down and ask your doctor for a smear. It doesn’t matter how young you are. If abnormal cells are found you could save your life. Cases like Nikki’s are just tragic and inexcusable and go to show that doctors are not always right.
